City departments will not necessarily approve applications based solely on GIS data. Applicants for city permits must inquire of the relevant city department for applicable requirements.
This map is for reference purposes only and CANNOT be relied upon as the final authority for zoning district determinations.
The official City of Newton Zoning Map is entitled "City of Newton, Massachusetts, Amendments to Zoning Plans, adopted July 21, 1951, as amended from time to time" (Newton Revised Zoning Ordinance, 2001, Section 30-4(b).) This set of plans is maintained and kept on file bythe City Engineer.
The Zoning Plans filed with the City Engineer and the interpretations of the Zoning Ordinance by the Commissioner of the Inspectional Services Department are the final legal authority for Zoning in the City of Newton.
City staff correct errors as they are identified. Newton's GIS Administrator maintains records regarding the source materials and methods used to create the digital data and will disclose this information upon request. Questions about this content may be sent to email@example.com.

Data are from the Newton Geographic Information System (GIS).
Hydrologic features (ponds, wetlands, streams, etc.) are from the Massachusetts Geographic Information System (MassGIS) with some additional information from Newton's GIS.
FEMA Flood Zones are from the FEMA digital Flood Insurance Rate Maps effective June 4, 2010.
Parcel Boundaries were originally compiled on 1979 1:1000 scale orthophoto base maps and are updated continuously.
Building footprints and road edge-of-pavement originally from Boston Edison (now NSTAR) based on 1991 aerial photos; Newton staff have
updated buildings from subdivision plans and orthophotography.
Topography was compiled from photogrammetry at 1:1000 scale based on a 1994 flyover.
